These are not exactly traps, these are in fact filled with some sweet or protein that contain poison. Boric acid and hydramethylnon are the common poisons used in most traps. When the ants get attracted to the traps they go inside the trap eat food and also take some to the colony for the queen and for other members. And when the remaining ants including queen eat the food and after some time the entire colony get destroyed. The poison used in traps are slow that's why the ants can successfully take the poison based food to the colony even after having it.

For ant trapping, you need to select right place to locate the traps as well as you need to identify the types of ants that are entering into your place so that you can fill traps with the appropriate food that the ants of that type prefer to eat.
